Architecture, Art, Elevation, and Leadership

Londinium was first a trading post for the Romans..

What’s the first thing you do when you’ve been attacked and survive? Build walls

After the Boudicca uprising in 60 AD the Romans started to build their walls.

The stone work in lower left corner is Roman, everything on top was built in succeeding ages.

Their building was meant to last.

I think one of the keys was their mortar which is different than anything used in the last several hundred years.

In London you can find architecture from almost any age.. According to several guides buildings are now made to last 30-40 years. When you submit plans to build, you also have to submit plans to disassemble.

The Lloyds building was designed by Richard Rodger’s, who also designed the Pompidou building in Paris

One name for this type of architecture is Bowelism, keying off of Brutalism.

30 years on ,You can’t see it from this picture, but off to the left there is major concrete repair work going on due to failing g concrete pillars. Should have called the Romans

But up we go

The Gerkin

This was built on the site near an IRA booming in 1992. 3 people were killed, one of which was a 15 year old girl.

As they were excavating the area in 2001 they came upon the grave of a 15 year old Roman girl.,( Gotta love carbon dating)

After the building was completed her remains were reburied here

Leadership Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson.

When Navel battles were fought during the.

Napoleonic wars you had to board the enemy ship.

Nelson believed in leading by example., so he would board along with everyone else.

During the battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife he was struck by grapeshot and his 17 year old step son saved his life by making a tourniquet to stop the arterial bleeding in his right arm.

In the battle of Trafalgar a sniper from a French ship shot Nelson while he was on deck.

The bullet hole

This battle wasn’t the end of the Napoleonic wars but it was a the beginning of of the ascension of the British Navy

It was the beginning of the Immortality of Nelson

No ballrooms for this guy
